my recurring dream
Last night I had the dream yet AGAIN.
In the dream, I'm in college and I realize it's the night before a final exam. The only problem is that I've NEVER ATTENDED CLASS. In last night's dream, I persuaded a classmate to give me notes to help me study, but they were unintelligible. Luckily, I woke up before the actual test part of the dream.
I know this is a common dream, so I googled "dream test unprepared" and got this. It basically says that the test dream is about facing a challenge in life and feeling like you're maybe not up to the task. It's about confidence and self-esteem (or a lack thereof).
Which sort of makes sense. I have a month before I go back to school. In that time, I need to completely rewrite SLIDE 2. (Well, not completely, but almost.) I really want to finish a solid rough draft before September so I can then focus on creating a brand new course that the counselors somehow convinced me to teach and prepare all my lesson plans for maternity leave, which will start in mid-December. It's a little stressful.
Also, I have the experience of my debut novel release coming up in late March. This is incredibly exciting, yet also terrifying. Just the fact that my ARCs have been printed and will begin circulating is freaking me out. I'm not sure I'm ready for this. But maybe it's like having a child, and you're never REALLY ready until it happens.
I will say this: I am so extremely grateful to have the Apocalypsies to share this experience with. We're able to talk about things that happen behind the scenes that we can't really share in public. And, even more so, I'm grateful to Megan Miranda for putting up with all my crazy emails. I'm not sure what I'd do if I had to go through this alone. So thank you, thank you, thank you, Apocalypsies, and especially Megan. I owe you chocolate.

SLIDE ARCs and writing update
So yesterday I got something VERY EXCITING in the mail!!!!
SIX ARCs from HarperCollins! Yes, I did a happy dance when I opened the envelope. So here's the thing. I only have six of them, and I've already designated one to send to the Bookanistas and one for the Apocalypsies to pass around. Which leaves four. But I want to think up something really special to do with the rest, and I need a little time to do that.*
Also, I started my SLIDE 2 rewrite yesterday following a conversation with my editor. I *think* I'm going in the right direction. It feels good. It feels right. We solved some of the problems I'd been worrying about with the ending. And I get to keep the COOLEST part in. So I'm happy about that!
In other news, I saw Harry Potter by myself yesterday. I might have cried. A little. And I went camping with the in-laws last week and spent some quality time with my TBR pile. I read three FANTASTIC books: UNEARTHLY by Cynthia Hand, TEN THINGS WE DID (and probably shouldn't have) by Sarah Mlynowski, and BLOOD RED ROAD by Moira Young. So good.
Sigh. Books make me happy. Have you read any great books lately? Do you have any recs for me?
*ETA: I'm thinking about starting some ARC tours with these. Wondering if anyone is interested?

Jackson Pearce on Writing a Book
Because I am consumed with SLIDE 2 revision ideas, I don't have the energy to think of a good blog topic. But I've had a lot of people ask me about HOW I write (especially during the school year), and I saw this excellent video by Jackson Pearce... So. Here it is.

sometimes
Sometimes you'll wake up at 3:32 in the morning, and you'll worry about the end of your novel and that the only way to fix it is to chop off the last half and completely rewrite it. You'll creep down the stairs and write a tearful email to your crit partner while stuffing Oreos into your mouth.
Not to worry.
All part of the process.
AND THEN. The next day, while you are writing a pitiful, whiney blog post, there will be a knock on the door. You'll wait a second to answer because you're wearing your monkey pajama pants. But then. You'll open the door and lean down and pick up a mysterious brown envelope. And inside...

Sorry for the crappy quality of the pictures! But I had to share!
It just goes to show you. Writing is a roller coaster. Keep your arms inside the car.
