Twisted Novel for Halloween

So I kept passing this book in the bookstore. My eye would be drawn to it, with its weird teacups dripping with blood, but I never had the courage to buy it. Until a few weeks ago when I picked it up in anticipation of Halloween. It says on the back: "Another twisted novel by Dia Reeves." And it is twisted. VERY twisted.

The book is about the two daughters of the Bonesaw Killer, a serial killer on death row. And, no, it's not all "those poor girls... how will they deal with the mess their father made?" Instead, it's more like the sisters, Kit and Fancy, have their own violent tendencies. The book explores whether they'll give into them and whether there's a... productive? way to do so.

I'm not going to lie. This book gave me nightmares. Every page had me wincing, wondering what acts of utter horror Reeves would torture me with next. And I LOVED every minute of it.

If you love Stephen King, this book might be for you. If you love a dynamic page-turner that pushes the envelope, this book might be for you. If you just want to be scared today (Halloween), this book might be for you.

One thing's for sure. I can't wait to read Dia Reeves's debut, Bleeding Violet. And anything else she writes. Though I'll be hiding under my covers with a flashlight while I devour her creepy words.

Tell the Truth Tuesday

1. How much do I love that my husband bought a box of Oops! All Berries last night. *nom nom nom*

2. How much do I love that there's a cereal CALLED Oops! All Berries???

3. How much do I love the product called Magic Wrinkle Remover so I don't even have to own an iron?

4. How much do I love having creepy dreams that might turn into book ideas?

5. How much do I love that I'm going to my FIRST BOOK SIGNING EVAR tonight?! Can't wait to meet Wendy Delsol and the rest of the Des Moines writing crew!!!

P.S. The answer to all these questions is A LOT. *noms Crunch Berries*

P.P.S. The dollhouse stays. Have you ever read THE DOLLHOUSE MURDERS, a book that came out in the eighties? If you haven't, you totally should. Sooooooo scary.

Tell the Truth Tuesday

Me: Uuuuuuuugh, I don't feel like blogging today. I'm tired. And I have to pee. And there are 50 literary analyses left to grade.

Naggy Little Voice: But today's Tuesday! Blogging is super easy!

Me: *brightening* Oh, you're right! I can just post 5-10 humiliating truths about myself and call it good.

Naggy Little Voice: There you go! Here's some chocolate.

Sooooooooo without further ado...

1. For a long time, I thought it was without further adieu. Like up until last week.

2. I am seriously depressed that Teen Mom is over for the season. Anyone know if there will be a season four? I'd at least love them to check in with the original moms once in a while to let us know what's going on.

3. Over the weekend, I read STORK by Wendy Delsol. I didn't realize the book was about a girl who could choose the fates of human souls for a chapter or two. You know, because the title STORK isn't clear enough. But once I realized that, I was hooked. She gets to CHOOSE THE FATES OF HUMAN SOULS. How cool. I'm so stoked to go to Wendy's launch party for FROST, the sequel, next week!

4. I'm getting to the point in pregnancy where I only have one pair of shoes that fits. An old, beat up pair of Danskos. I pray that those shoes will last and I won't have to resort to wearing flip flops to work, like last time.

5. I didn't take back the dollhouse.

In which the Mall of America foils my plans...

So I have this to-do list. All the things I must accomplish before the baby comes in December. One of those things is to finish all of my Christmas shopping... like... yesterday. So when my in-laws decided to take a trip to the Mall of America over the weekend, I thought, "Yes. Win!"

Nope. I lose. After walking around the mall for six hours, I came away with two sweaters for myself and a holiday outfit for the munch. Six hours, people. Six.

I decided American Girl is some crack I don't want to get into. Sure, everything is adorable, but the munch drags around a naked, markered-on ragdoll. And she loves it. She doesn't need a Bitty Baby and the accompanying teddy bear, cute outfits, pajamas, and carrying case. Not to mention stroller, crib, potty training set, and doctor's kit.

So when we got home last night I was feeling despondent. And pregnant. And hormonal.

This did not lead to rational acts.

This led me to jump in the car, drive to Toys 'R' Us, and load up a cart with Tangled action figures, pretty princess dress up clothes, Tag Junior books, crayons, coloring books, and this:

Don't ask me why a two-year-old needs a dollhouse mansion, complete with light-up Christmas decorations. I think my inner child had something to do with the fact that this behemoth is crowded into my backseat at the moment. I don't even have anywhere to put it.

But at least that shopping is done.

15 minutes later...

Sigh. I know. It's going back. But at least I (er... we) got to possess it for a few brief shining moments.

Tell the Truth Tuesday

1. I love sweaters... mostly because they cover up my Ursula-esque arms. But they're also fuzzy and comfy! And thus I love this weather, which is the perfect time for me to break out the sweaters! Okay, who am I kidding? I've been cranking the air conditioner in my classroom since June, and everyone who enters must wear a sweater.

2. SLIDE second pass pages are hurtling my way! I'm glad because I can think of at least one change I want to make. And also this means SLIDE is one step closer to being on the shelves. Whee!

3. I'm expecting an edit letter from my editor next week. It'll be great to get back to work on SLIDE 2, and it sounds like we're definitely on the same page as far as changes that need to be made. It'll feel good to be creative again.

4. The munchkin and I are going to the American Girl restaurant with her cousins this weekend. This could be awesome or a total nightmare. I can totally see the munch ripping the heads off all the dolls and playing soccer with them before the food shows up.

5. 10 more weeks until baby.     O.O

That is all.
